TANZANIA : Tanzania to Participate in Africa Zone Five Basketball Championships

TANZANIA will participate in the U-16 Africa Zone five championships in Rwanda from May 25-31, this year. The country is also expected to participate in the U-23 Zone Five Championship in Cairo, Egypt.
Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) Secretary General Sale Zonga said in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday they have already confirmed their participation in the two events.
"We are going to take part in the U-16 and U-23 Africa Zone five championships in Rwanda and Egypt because we want our teams to gain international experience and exposure," he said.
He, however, admitted the federation is currently facing financial constraints. The Rwanda tournament will involve all 10 countries in the zone - Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Uganda and the hosts.
The winners will qualify for the FIBA Afrobasket U-16 tournament with the girls' edition scheduled for July 16-24 in Madagascar and the boys' to be held in Mali in July. Egypt has already qualified in both categories.
Rwanda will also host the Zone V Club Championships from October 4-11 to accommodate Uganda who will represent the region at the FIBA Afrobasket men's Championships in Tunis, Tunisia from August 19-30.
Zone 5 women's champions Uganda will compete at the All-Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville from September 5-19 as well as the FIBA Afrobasket Women's Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon from September 24-October 3.
Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA) are confident they have the capacity to organize successful tournaments, having hosted the 2009 FIBA Afrobasket Men's Championships in 2010, FIBA Africa U-18 Championships and the 2011 Zone V Championship.
