RWANDA : Basketball Federation Turns to Schools

The basketball federation Ferwaba is now focusing on promoting and developing school basketball.
"We received a fund from the Olympic Solidarity offered through Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee. The initiative is called the International Sports Development Program which benefits all federations so that they can develop referees and detect talent in schools," explained Ferwaba technical director Shema Maboko.
"The program started in January and will end in June with fifteen schools, both boys and girls younger than 18. We will then select the best players to feature in the U16 and U18 national teams," he added.
"We are yet to organize several school competitions, which will be done in collaboration with the Rwanda School Sports Federation (RSSF)," Mboko explained. "We help RSSF by training coaches and referees so that they can identify talent."
"Currently we do not have any partnership with other others as far as training is concerned, but we work hand in hand with Zone Africa as well as the International Basketball Federation," Mboko added.
Rwanda will host the U16 Zone Five competition for boys and girls scheduled from May 25 to 31.
