Kenya Basketball Federation has confirmed that the former KCB Lions basketball team will take part in the 2013 season of the premier league despite the main sponsors Kenya Commercial Bank withdrawing their financial support to the team.
KCB announced earlier this year that they will no longer support the club in the KBF league and confirmed withdrawing the club from the league. The players and officials however committed themselves to the club and registered the team for the coming season.
This therefore means one of the oldest clubs in the country’s basketball history will drop the KCB tag and play under the name Lions as they seek to find a new sponsor.
Initial reports had indicated that KBF will promote Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to take the place of Lions but this has since changed and according to KBF Fixtures secretary Joseph Amuoko, “Lions have confirmed that they will be able to honor their fixtures even without the sponsorship. So they will continue being in the league.”
KCB finished in third place last season behind USIU and champions Cooperative Bank.
Nairobi Aviation and Nakuru Club will be promoted to the top tier league in the men’s category while KCA and KU Oryx have been promoted to the women’s Premier League to replace Predators who pulled out and Gladiators who were demoted.
