ZIMBABWE : BAZ to Host Tournament

ZIMBABWE is set to host the Zone VI Afro-Basketball qualifying tournament next month. Countries from the Southern African region are expected to participate. The Basketball Association of Zimbabwe's director of competitions, Simon Lawson, said that the qualifiers will be held in Harare and this will see Zimbabwe and South Africa battling it out for the top honours.
"We hope to play at home against South Africa who have already confirmed their participation.
"It is advantageous for us to play at home, so the coming of the teams we have invited will be of added advantage to us," said Lawson.
He also said that Angola have already qualified for this tournament since they are the defending champions and Mozambique will not be participating as they are set to host the Afro-Basketball championships later this year.
Both the Zimbabwe senior men and women's teams will participate at the Afro-Basketball qualifiers.
"The senior men's team have already started preparations for the qualifiers whose exact dates are yet to be confirmed by the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa's Zone Six administrators," Lawson said.
Countries like Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Botswana are yet to confirm their participation at this inaugural tournament.
Last year, South Africa hosted the 2011 FIBA (Federation Internationale Basketball Association) Africa Zone VI Club Championship (sponsored by ESPN) at the Mandeville Sports Club (near Eastgate Shopping Center).
This presented an opportune occasion to officially launch the NBA Africa office and the introduction of BBall, a new lifestyle television show on SABC1.

Kenya: Musingu High Win Arunga Basketball Tourney Title

MUSINGU High School beat hosts and defending champions, St.Peters Mumias boys 22-08 to win this year's edition of the annual KBF Western Mike Arunga tournament at the latter's grounds.
Smarting from the losing the finals of the New Era tournament to Friends School Kamusinga a week ago, Musingu played a stifling defence and gave the host no chance. Wellington Omondi scored 10 points for the victors and won the top scorer's trophy. Despite losing, Oscar Mukoyani of the Saints was crowned the tournament's Most Valuable Player. En-route to the finals, Musingu edged out Sigalame high 25-18 in the semis while Mumias beat Kilingili high 37-22. Quarter final results were as follows: Sigalame 17 Kakamega 14, Kilingili 16 Ingotse 15, St.Peters Mumias 34 Malava 21 and Musingu 19 Lumakanda 08.
In the clubs' category, Bungoma Sonics fielding Kenya team trialists Martin Kitongo and Fred Lugasi crashed Busia Raptors 56-23 to be crowned champions this year. Defending champions, Masinde Muliro University did not take part in this year's championships.

In spite of its 59 points Somalia was defeated 83 to 88. Aden, the player of Washington State in NCAA added 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 7 steals in 39 minutes.

He beats the old record of 55 points detained by the Brazilian Oscar Schmidt during the Olympics of Seoul in 1988.

GAMBIA : We Will Bring Basketball Back to Its Feet, Says Gba Prexy

The president of the Gambia Basketball Association GBA), Papa Njie, has said they will bring basketball back to its feet in the country.
This was revealed to reporters at the 2013 opening league competitions held last weekend at the Manneh Sillah basketball lawn in Banjul.
Papa told reporters that it was difficult at the beginning but they were able to put their efforts together at the executive level to bring the league into existence.
He said: "We had to work on the infrastructure, trained coaches and referees, which we have achieved at the end.
"We want the game to be played countrywide but we have to go back to the roots. We need to go back to the schools from where we will be able to select the U-16 and 17 teams; there we can build up to have a national team," Njie said.
In decentralizing the discipline, the GBA president urges the media to help popularise basketball countrywide.
"I think we are heading to the right direction and we have to ensure that it's back to its feet," he said, whilst thanking the GNOC for the vital role they played in developing the game and thanked as well the Peace Corps members who are also helping in developing the game.
"We have Peace Corps who are playing the role of time keepers, match commissioners, referees and a coach and there is a bright future for basketball."
He therefore called on all members of basketball to work as a team to develop the game in the country.

EAST AFRICA : Lessons

SHEFFIELD (Júlio Chitunda’s African Message) - After six days of competition in Dar es Salaam, both Kenya and Egypt have secured their places at Afrobasket Women 2013 thanks to successful campaigns in the Africa zone 5 qualifier.
A disappointing performance by defending champions Rwanda means they miss out on qualifying for the Afrobasket for the first time since 2005. They had made three consecutive appearances (2007, 2009, 2011).
Meanwhile, in the men’s qualifier, Egypt confirmed their regional dominance as they finished a perfect 5-0.
The all-East Africa showdown saw Kenya's women crowned the region champions as they won all three of their games, including a 77-57 trouncing of Uganda in their final contest.
The team’s co-captain, Hilda Hindasi Luvandwa, was named the tournament MVP in Dar es Salaam.
The success means Kenya will play at their fourth Afrobasket Women in a row.
Luvandwa, also the Kenyan national league MVP, was a giant throughout this qualifier event as she averaged 25 points per game.
If Kenya’s triumph was an eye-catching moment, Egypt’s second place is a major success for the North Africans as it represents their first Afrobasket Women appearance since 2001.
Since Egypt's youth teams became a dominant force in the past decade with continental titles in both the U16 and U18 Africa categories, their women’s team is now capitalising on it.
The rising number of Egyptian girls playing college basketball in the United States is without a doubt a positive effect on the national team.
Kenya finished unbeaten in three games, but they had to play their best game to beat Egypt 70-64 in the finals.
The women’s competition was played in a round robin format.
The major upset from the Dar es Salaam showdown was clearly Rwanda’s fourth-place finish, especially after suffering an 81-68 defeat to Uganda in the Bronze Medal Game.
The Afrobasket Women 2011 leading scorer Tierra Henderson, one of the few professionals on the Rwandese team, was unable to make a big impact.
Burundi finished fifth while hosts Tanzania ended winless.
The win means Kenya and Egypt are representing Africa zone 5 in the upcoming Afrobasket Women, which will be played in Mozambique in August.
Men’s event
In the men’s qualifier, it was business as usual as Egypt maintained their Afrobasket regularity after beating Rwanda 82-76 in the Final.
Egyptians have only missed out on the continental championship once (2005) in the past two decades, and have won a silver (1993) and four bronze medals (1992, 1999, 2001 and 2003).
Just like their women’s team, Rwanda's men missed out on qualifying for the first time since 2007, after three consecutive appearances.
But their consolation came from Kenneth Gasana who was named the tournament’s MVP after scoring 23 points, to go with seven assists and six rebounds in the final.
Kenya finished third after beating Somalia 72-63.
Underdogs until the start of the Africa zone 5 qualifier event, Somalia turned out to be one of the strongest sides in East Africa.
With a squad filled with former US college players, Somalia started their qualifier campaign with a 81-79 upset over favourites Kenya.
The Somalians then went on to beat Burundi 98-80 before they fell short to Rwanda in the Semi-Finals.
The disappointment means Somalia will complete three decades without an Afrobasket showing. They last appeared in the tournament in 1983 in Egypt.
The hosts of the qualifier, Tanzania, were denied a win in the tournament, and extended their absence from the Afrobasket. They last played in the continent's leading national team event in 1974.
The overall lessons from the zone 5 indicate the following:
- Rwanda has to review its basketball programmes, especially after dropping most of their professional players;
- Kenya's women’s team has strengthened its regional position;
- Somalia's men’s team showed they can compete on the same level as their regional counterparts, which is quite brilliant for the war-torn country;
- Egypt’s men now have a chance to battle for a podium place at Afrobasket;
- Burundi and Uganda need desperately to make improvement and by hosting their biggest basketball event ever, credit should be given to Tanzania.

2013 FIBA U19 World Championship : Otto and Fall talk on U19 World Champs

Aristide Anselm Otto
Aristide Anselm Otto (CIV) 2012 Afrobasket U18 (Mozambique)
CIV/SEN - Otto and Fall talk on U19 World Champs
ABIDJAN (2013 FIBA U19 World Championship) - Two weeks have passed since the draw for this summer's FIBA U19 World Championship took place in Prague, and the two African contenders - Senegal and Ivory Coast - are positive as well as hopefull that they can achieve some success.
Both teams are debutants in the tournament which runs from 27 June to 7 July in Czech capital city.
Last year's U18 Afrobasket champions Senegal have been drawn in Group C along Serbia, Brazil and Australia, while runners-up Ivory Coast will take on China, USA and Russia in Group D.
Despite the potential gap between them and their opponents, Ivory Coast's Aristide Anselm Otto, a three-point specialist, prefers to see the difference on court.
“These are all great teams, we all know that and respect, but to me, this pool may have some surprises,” he told FIBA.com.
Otto, who plays for Abidjan-based club Eby - started all eight of the Ivorians' games in Mozambique and led last summer’s Afrobasket in three-points, hitting on 18 of 30 attempts for a staggering 56 per cent success rate from the behind the arc.
He averaged 14 points per game and registered three game-high performances, including 18 points in the 71-62 defeat to Senegal in the Gold Medal Game.
Another successful campaign is all Otto hopes for at the World Championship.
“I am not nervous at all,” said the 1.87m point guard, before explaining that he feels “honoured” and looks “forward to defend the colours” of his country.
Despite Ivory Coast’s 5-3 record in Mozambique, the 18-year-old says he and his team-mates will use their athleticism and quick transitions as main weapon against their taller opponents.
“My play style is determination to win and score more points than my opponents,” he explains, adding that his game may one day take him “to the NBA or even become a professional basketball player.”
As for the players who inspire him, there's two of them - "Ivory Coast international Eric Anderson Affi and Dwyane Wade in the NBA,” he said.
Senegal’s reaction
Just like Ivory Coast, Senegal arrived in Mozambique last summer with a modest track record in the U18 continental competition.
However, they turned the odds around to go on and win it all and now head coach Madiene Fall - the mentor of the new African champions - insists that his team must capitalise on although he recognizes a much tougher opposition in Czech Republic.
“It is a difficult group but we are going to the tournament to compete seriously, and not just to make up numbers,” he explained to FIBA.com.
“If we will win many games, I don’t know, but we want to make a good showing.
“We won in Mozambique because we played good defense. If you play effective offensive game it is even better, and we have players with (the) ability to fulfill these tasks,” he said.
The 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship tournament might still several months away, but coach Fall is already working on his team’s preparations.
“We have been working very closely with these young players, and I believe they can compete equally with their opponents (at the world championship)," he explained.
“It will be difficult, but not impossible to win games."
And Fall has plenty of motives to keep a positive speech as he counts on a group of talented players that include Pape Sadiaw Diatta, a high-school player in Florida, Khadim Fall who plays for France Pro-A side Le Mans, Papa Modou Mbaye and Waly Niang, a duo with Spanish giants Real Madrid's U20 team.
Coach Fall is due to travel to Europe and the USA in April to meet up some of his players and their clubs and colleges.
He will do everything in his power to help them succeed.
“From the Afrobasket,” Fall said “I am planning to take six or seven players and strengthen the team with players we could not take to Mozambique.”

GAMBIA : Basketball League Resumes After Eight Years

Basketball in The Gambia can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the first national league got underway for the first time in nearly a decade on Saturday evening at the Manneh Sillah Memorial Court, the home of Gambian basketball.
The sport that last played its national league in The Gambia in 2005 resumed with a double header at the weekend. In the first official match also under the leadership of the Gambia Basketball Association's new president, Muhammed Papa Njie, Brikama beat Sports House 37 points to 23 before Wallidan narrowly defeated Gambia Armed Forces by 23 points to 16.
Speaking to this reporter, Papa Njie, the Basketball Association (GBA) president, said that he felt honoured that the league has finally kicked off after eight years without one, and thanked his entire executive for their efforts.
Matches will continue this weekend on Friday at the Independence Stadium with games between Saints and Serrekunda West while YMCA will battle it out with Serrekunda East. Matches will begin at 4: 30 pm

RWANDA : Rwanda Gets Wild Card to Africa Cup Finals

DESPITE losing the final match to Egypt in the Zone 5 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, Rwanda men's basketball team has been granted passage to participate in the 2013 African Cup of Nations due to be held in August in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire.
The men's team reached the final only to be denied the title by mighty Egyptians following an 82-76 victory on Saturday. Kenny Gasana was Rwanda's top scorer with 23 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
This was Rwanda's second loss to Egypt in the same tournament. Both sides met in the opening match where Egypt ruthless bea Rwanda 96-57.
Rwanda basketball federation secretary general Richard Mutabazi confirmed the wild card news yesterday. "Fiba Africa has given us (Rwanda) a wildcard to compete in the Africa Cup despite missing out the spot in the final," he said.
"The team did well in the Zone V qualifiers and despite not managing to defend the title, we are generally proud of the team which was composed mainly of young players," added Mutabazi.
Mutabazi confirmed that they are now waiting for the official communication from Fiba Africa boss Eng. Morris Aluanga.
Rwanda will join Egypt in the African Men's Cup in August while Kenya and Egypt will participate in the Africa Women's Cup which will be held in Mozambique in September.

UGANDA : Team Uganda return from Dar es Salaam with bronze

Norman Blick and his Ugandan teammates ran Egypt close but failed to pull of a surprise victory
Norman Blick and his Ugandan teammates ran Egypt close but failed to pull of a surprise victory. PHOTO by Ismail Kezaala Qualification for the 2013 Afrobasket was never a real prospect for Team Uganda – men and women – prior to the Fiba Africa Zone V Championship.
Neither team came close to attaining the minimum requirement to make the continental championship.
Only the winners made it from the week-long event that climaxed on Saturday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
However, there was a silver lining for the women’s game in Uganda.
The women’s national basketball team returns today with their heads held high after finishing third.
They beat last year’s finalists Rwanda 81-68 in the bronze medal match.
This is the highest placing the women have managed at this level and it’s an improvement from last year when they won only two games in Kigali, Rwanda to clinch fourth.
Unlike the men’s competition that had seven teams pooled into two groups and needed a knockout format to determine the champions, the women played a round-robin format.
Coach Timothy Odeke’s team had earlier beaten Burundi 64-44 and thrashed Tanzania 63-41.
Losses to Egypt 50-64 and Kenya 57-77 quashed any dreams of qualifying for the Fiba Africa Nations Championship, Afrobasket, later this year in Madagascar.
Neighbours Kenya got the lone slot after beating Egypt 70-64 for a perfect tournament. The Ugandan men, champions in 2005, have some soul-searching to do.
Many will still point to the short training period – just two weeks worth 12 sessions with each constituting almost three hours - as the biggest detriment.
The margins by which coach Mandy Juruni’s team lost were not that big. They lost to Egypt (67-80), and Rwanda (85-90) in their group games.
The 80-66 win over Tanzania set them into a sixth-place playoff.
There, Burundi emerged winners 89-86 after overtime for the Ugandan side to end the tournament on a low.
The inquest will start in earnest and better preparations will be a must when the regional competition returns in two years’ time. Egypt beat Rwanda 81-75 to win the men’s gold.

UGANDA : Women Win Bronze At Fiba Zone V Tournament

The women got bronze, the men finished fifth. But there is no shortage of voices describing the 2013 FIBA Africa Zone Five Afrobasket championship in Tanzania as a success for Uganda.
They include both of Uganda's head coaches. Men's coach Mandy Juruni and his ladies' counterpart Timothy Odeke are united in the view that the one-week tournament that attracted seven countries was filled with positives for Uganda.
"The tournament was a success in terms of the way we played," said Juruni.
"I think we played good basketball but we were unlucky to lose close games especially the one against Rwanda (90-85), which eliminated us from qualification. (Still,) I am disappointed because we didn't deserve to be number five."
Egypt scooped the men's title after an 82-75 victory over Rwanda on the closing day as Uganda settled for a classification win over Tanzania. But there is some comfort to be drawn from the fact that both finalists came out of Uganda's group. And not without a fight from Juruni's outfit.
Egypt and Rwanda were made to sweat for their victories over Uganda, a fact that owed little to the draining Dar es Salaam temperatures and a lot to the quality of our national team.
That's why Juruni believes that: "We have a good future ahead of us. Our performance here has built a good foundation."
Odeke is just as optimistic after the display of his team, which climaxed with an 81-63 triumph over 2012 champions Rwanda.
Odeke observed: "This tournament was a success because we played with a lot of cohesion. Even the games we lost, we played well but you could see those teams were clearly superior to us. I think we can build on this for the future."
The Uganda men were third of four last year while the women came fourth out five.

NIGERIA : NBBF Begins Preparation for 2016 Olympics

To ensure that Nigeria's senior basketball team, D' Tigers qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil after making their debut at the London Olympics Games, Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) said it has began preparation for the quadrennial events. NBBF president, Tijani Umar disclosed while reviewing last year activities of the federation during their 2013 AGM.
He said a four year road map programme has been worked out to steer the team preparation. "In the same manner we prepared and implemented a road map for our Olympics qualification in 2012, work has reached an advanced stage on our four year strategic plan (2013-2016) which we will deploy shortly," he said.
To give the plan a desired mileage, he said the federation has unveiled its functional website that will give insight as to how the final product will look like when activated and placed in public domain in month's time. "When that happens, everyone will be in a position to see what we are doing, how we are doing, what the criteria is and what the outcome is likely to be. In short, our mission, vision and strategy will be at your disposal to scrutinize and objectively critize."
He said the achievement of the men's basketball team in the year 2012 has given them a unique opportunity to demonstrate the potential of Nigerian basketball to be continental and world class programmes. "After taking the world by storm in Venezuela and struggling with injuries to beat the African champion, Tunisia in the London Olympics, the mission of the team at the African Championship (Afrobasket 2013) in Cote D'Ivoire in August is no longer lost on anyone.
"Preparations in that direction have gone far. Training camp venues are already being finalised, players contact to obtain commitment, player monitoring, opponent scout, training programme and attachment for team staff and other national team coaches, as well as player insurance negotiations are taking place at the moment," he stated.
According to him, the team has already been invited to the Stankovic Continental championship, scheduled to hold in China in July. He said other key invitational tournaments are also be consider for the team ahead of August African basketball showpiece.

UGANDA : Basket Season Opens in Style

Most people wait until Friday to get the party started, but Castle Lite defied the rules, turning last Thursday into the new Friday.
Castle Lite is the title sponsor of the Friday Night Lights (FNL) basketball tournament. The tournament, which kicks off this Friday, is meant to be a curtain-raiser to the annual basketball season. It brings together basketball players and fans to play a fun-filled game. The rules of the game are adjusted a bit, so that everyone can have a good time. Each team is supposed to have a girl who is expected to be on court at all times, and a random fan.
Last year, the tournament was the talk of town, because it brought faces that were not known to grace basketball. From Kampala Central MP, Muhammad Nsereko; Lord Mayor, Elias Lukwago; Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi; first son Muhoozi Kainerugaba; journalist Andrew Mwenda, to socialites Judith Heard, Sue Ochola and Zari Hussein, the tournament for the first time brought a carnival-like atmosphere to YMCA grounds in Wandegeya.
This year, KCCA executive director Jennifer Musisi has already conformed to dress down and come down to Wandegeya not to demolish a building, but to play some basketball. With that much success, Castle Lite has promised to make it bigger and better, and they started by holding a launch party last Thursday at Legends bar and restaurant. I know you might be wondering why a basketball tournament would be having its party at a rugby ground but, the tournament is all about fan and Legends bar is the in thing in town - ever since the place switched hands to new investors.
Castle Lite set up a VIP tent, fully stocked with eats and drinks. Some guests were invited, others had to part with Shs 10,000. To spice the party up as patrons drowned themselves in beer, there was a deejay battle between new comer DJ Carol and veteran DJ Rachel. DJ Carol has some skill, but she still has a long way to go. It was no contest and DJ Rachel won hands down.
The FNL crew also had some freestylers who pulled some and One moves. And to crown it up, Ruyonga and The Mith did their thing. I must say their collabo, Hustle, is off the hook.

RWANDA : Egypt Ends Rwanda's Run for Africa Cup

With only one game remaining, Rwanda women basketball team's hopes of qualifying for the African Cup were dealt a big blow after losing to Egypt 56-81 at the ongoing Zone 5 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Friday, Tierra Henderson, one of two professional players on the team, was Rwanda's highest scorer with 26 points, more than half of the team's total score.
The defeat leaves the reigning champions Rwanda in fourth position with five points, while Egypt remains second with seven points. Kenya leads the standings with eight points after they beat Egypt 70-64 on Thursday.
Kenya's final match was against Uganda on Friday and a win would ensure the Kenyan girls qualify for the Cup of Nations as the best of Zone 5.
The only hope for Rwanda to qualify as second best is to only secure a win against third-placed Uganda today in the last game in the round robin competition.
The men's semifinals played last evening, Rwanda were due to take on Somalia, while Egypt took on Kenya. The finals are set for today. The Cup of Nations will be hosted by Democratic Republic of Congo in August.

GAMBIA : Wallidan, Brikama win Basketball League opener

Monday, January 28, 2013
Brikama and Wallidan have won the opening league competitions held at the Manneh Sillah Basketball Lawn in Banjul on Saturday, 26 January 2013.
Brikama defeated Sport House by 37 points to 23 at the first game followed by GAF defeating Wallidan by 23 to 16 points.
The opening of the 2013 basketball league competition was witnessed by delegates of the sporting arena.
Speaking to reporters at the end of the games, the head coach of Brikama United, Lamin Touray, expressed delight over the victory.
We are here for the victory, for which we have been training for a long time. We needed this game,” he said, adding that they would be training much harder in preparation for their next game.
Touray also commended the organizing committee for their good job and Brikama Sports Committee for playing a vital role in decentralizing sport in Brikama, in which basketball is not an exception.
He said their sports committee is therefore making sure basketball is back to its feet.

KENYA : East Africa’s MVP Indasi attributes it to team power

Hilda Indasi remains the best player in the region winning top honors in all major competitions she features in. The USIU lead player was over the weekend named the Most Valuable player during the Regional Zone 5 African Cup of Nations qualifiers that also featured Egypt.
She also emerged as the tournament’s top scorer in a competition Kenya finished unbeaten to qualify for the African Cup of Nations that will be hosted by Mozambique in September.
Hilda was last year named the Most Valuable Player of the Kenyan Basketball premier League after guiding her team USIU to a second place finish behind champions Eagle Wings. She had also earlier in the year 2012 been named the Most Valuable player during the Zone 5 basketball Club championships held in Kampala Uganda.
Indasi thanks her team mates for braving the horrible hot weather in Daresalaam to extinguish all existing opposition especially against North Africans Egypt. She says the team’s success was due to the dedication of all team members.
“That was one of the best competitions we have featured in. Everyone played their hearts out and I thank God for every single point we gained from the tournament. We now look forward to the challenge that comes ahead and Mozambique should be prepared for our arrival.” She says.
“The match against Egypt was; like our final. They are athletic, tall, fast on the ball and very technical as well, but then we are the best because we defeated them. It was a tense match and with dehydration and the heat also playing g its part, my team mates gave it their all.” She adds.
The women’s qualifiers was played on a round robin format with Kenya playing five matches back to back against Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Egypt and Uganda winning all of them.
“Under the Daresalaam heat, it was challenging to play all those matches without resting. I thank God for the top awards and I further appreciate the support of team mates because without their valuable support, nothing could have been achieved. It is now time for all of us to focus and concentrate on better preparation for the African Cup of Nations.” She concludes.

CAMEROON : An African Queen in the Cameroon Kingdom

Ramses-Lonlack-22-01-2013
Ramses Lonlack (CAM) Memphis Tigers (2008-2012)
CoAfter spending four superb seasons with the Memphis Tigers in the NCAA Women's Division 1, Cameroon's Ramses Lonlack is finishing her civil engineering degree but can’t hide the fact that her attention is also on the national team, a side she hopes to become a regular member of.
Later this year, she could return to the courts with Cameroon to compete at the 2013 Afrobasket Women in Mozambique, a qualifier tournament for the 2014 FIBA World Championship for women.
While she is "proud to represent Cameroon", Lonlack hopes to be informed of Cameroon's Federation's plans’ beforehand in order to avoid any clashes with her studies.
“It depends on the timing. If I am not in school, I am sure I am going to join my national team,” she told FIBA.com.
Affectionately known as 'the African Queen (AQ)' - because her college teammates struggled to pronounce her name - she last played for Cameroon in a 73-50 defeat at the 2011 Afrobasket Women against tournament hosts Mali.
The Cameroonians boasted one of the youngest teams in that tournament, with an average age of 22.
They registered a 3-5 record and finished sixth.
Lonlack contributed 5.4 points per game.
She wishes she "could have helped more" her national team as she sat out three of their eight games due to a knee injury suffered in Cameroon's opener against Rwanda.
The 24-year-old feels that the Mozambique showdown is the stage for Cameroon’s turning-point.
The Indomitable Lionesses, as the team is known, is more like a talented kingdom, especially as they can count on a very athletic team that includes former collegiate UNLV Rebels forward Sandrine Nzeukou and former Arizona Wildcats center Amina Njonkou, the team’s leading scorer two years ago in Mali.
“The problem with African teams and organisers is that they keep changing the tournament’s schedule and programmes all the time, and you can't prepare yourself appropriately," Lonlack said.
"In my opinion, we need at least three weeks to make a team play together.
"I don't believe that one week is adequate time for a team to get used to each other when they meet only a few times a year.
"The transition plays and other movements require time to get used to," she added.
Cameroon’s best result to date is a bronze medal at the 1984 Afrobasket Women in Dakar, Senegal and they currently stand 52nd in the FIBA Women's Ranking.
College legacy

Lonlack might have finished her college basketball career, but she is still practicing with the Memphis Tigers.
She was named NCAA Conference-USA Defensive Player of the Year last year and chosen to the same conference's All-Defensive Team in three consecutive years (2010-2012).
The 1.73m guard showed promise from the start, being named C-USA Rookie of the Year in 2008.
She enjoys a remarkable personal record as she holds the Tigers' record for career games played (129), career starts (123) and minutes played (3,958).
Although she is focused on her academics, playing professional basketball has not been ruled out as a possibility.
“I am more likely to play overseas," Lonlack said before pointing out that that she believes she has "the potential to make it to the WNBA".
And that potential is highlighted by Melissa McFerrin, the Memphis Tigers head coach, who once said of Lonlack: "Obviously the first thing she does for our team is still get our defense started at the top of the floor and run the floor and create a threat in transition, and I don't know that anyone does those two things better, certainly in our program, and maybe, in a lot of past years, here at the University of Memphis."

The Kenya men’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon managed to redeem themselves by beating Somalia 72-63 in the Zone 5 African Cup of Nations qualifiers 3rd place play-offs.
Kenya had earlier been surprised by Somalia in the group stages going down 79-81 and the win is a huge relief for the side. The women’s team had superb outing at the tournament held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where they were crowned champions with a hundred percent winning record and in the process earned a ticket to the African Cup of Nations.
Somalia kicked off the match on a high note getting the best of Kenya, taking the 1st quarter with a 21-11 score line. All the stakes were against Kenya and sensing a second embarrassment they stepped up their game and took the second quarter with an impressive 22-13 win to put the half time scores at a closely shaven 34-33 in favor of the Somalis.
The 3rd quarter saw Francis Ngujiri’s side unleash all their potential taking the quarter at 19 points against Somalia’s 9 points but in the last quarter the two teams settled for a 20 point draw to hand Kenya the 3rd place.
Griffin Ligare who captains Thunder basketball team in the KBF Premier League gave Kenya 23 points while Somalia’s Fisal Jama had 25 points in the highest in the match.

ZIMBABWE : Harare basketball league in full swing

Things are heating up in the Harare Basketball League as Mbada Amazons and Cheetahs have hit the ground running after three rounds of matches in their leagues.
REPORT BY RANGANAI DZOTIZEI
Women’s outfit Amazons, who are in their debut season, have surprised all and sundry and are undefeated in their last three matches with their 43-33 win over Real Returners last time, a clear indication they are not in the league by mistake.
They were scheduled to play LA last night, hoping to consolidate their 100% start to the season.
The same can also be said about Cheetahs, who are wreaking havoc in the men’s section with some breathtaking displays.
Cheetahs’ last victory, a 63-31 demolition of UZ Stars, underlined their credentials and the team seems to be getting better with each game.
The same however, cannot be said of Cameo who, despite the presence of Erick Banda, who is back from the United States, have not had the best of starts.
Two defeats in their last three outings have put them under immense pressure and they hope today’s home match against UZ Stars would get their season back on track.
In today’s fixtures, Drifters would be hoping to make it two wins in a row when they face ZB Spartans at Richwood while Mablazo and South Central hope to bounce back from last week’s defeats when they square off in the day’s early game.
In the women’s league, Platinum Ballers, smarting from a 43-32 loss to JBC last weekend, host Pistons while Green Stars have a date with UZ Stars in a full programme of fixtures.

The Kenya national ladies basketball team is a step away from qualifying for the African Cup of Nations after they beat Egypt 70 – 64 on Thursday evening in the Zone 5 qualifiers to maintain a 100 percent record so far.
Kenya’s next match which is the last in the round robin competition will be against Uganda on Friday and a win will ensure the Kenyan girls qualify for the Cup of Nations as the best of Zone 5.The Cup of Nations will be hosted by Democratic Republic of Congo in August.
The matches were played in a round robin format and Kenya has been in impeccable form dismissing Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Egypt in previous matches.
Against Egypt on Thursday, team leaders Silalei Shani (Captain) and Hilda Indasi (Vice Captain) led Kenya to victory after they each scored 19 points the highest in the match by an individual. Kenya took the 1st quarter 18- 14 in what was seen to be their hardest match since the tournament kicked off on Monday in Dar es Salaam Tanzania.
The 2nd quarter saw Kenya pile more pressure to the North African side and it bore fruit and they romped their opponents the scores being 17- 4 to put the half time scores at 35-18 with Kenya having a comfortable lead.
In the 3rd quarter Egypt stepped up their game but they were no match for Ronnie Owino’s side and Kenya once more were a top with a 2 point difference winning 15 -13.
The last quarter saw Kenya slump to 20 -33 defeat but the damage they had caused in the first 3 quarters was enough to ensure that they take the day. Reem Osama was Egypt’s top scorer with 17 points followed by Hagar Hesham.

Uganda: Basketball - End of the Road

The men's national basketball team couldn't make it out of the group stages for the third consecutive time in a row at the Zone V Championship.
They lost two games to Rwanda and Egypt respectively, managing only one and repeating last year's script. Felix Eupal looks at what went wrong and if the team could muster its winning ways as it did seven years ago.
A lot has changed and a lot has stayed the same. But this is not how we expected the men's national basketball team fortunes to pan out at the ongoing Zone V championships in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The team left in high gear. In Mandy Juruni, Gad Eteu and Bernice Ankunda, the federation had hit at a winning team of coaches.
Both the coaches and players were moderately facilitated and even flown to the venue avoiding the tasking road trip. But still we failed to get out of the group stages, only holding our heads high with a 80-66 win against Tanzania.
What went wrong?
Adequate preparations have always been our Achilles' heel. Eleven days and two friendly matches don't point to a sense of preparedness for a tournament of such calibre. While a National Team Steering committee was set up to ensure that the team goes places and actually competes rather than participate, there was not enough time for its work.
The basketball league goes from April to December, leaving no time for the players to play together or even squeeze in some friendly games. The other thing is that the selection panel needs to have a sense of direction. Leaving out Isaac Afidra haunted the team especially in game two against Rwanda which they lost 85-90.
Afidra knows what it means to play crutch basketball; ask any Dmark Power how he delivered the 2011 title with seconds on the clock.
The selection panel also didn't cross-check the details of the players they had on the final 12-man list. For instance, Team Uganda missed out on the services of Geoffrey Soro throughout the tournament because his passport information wasn't matching with the information submitted.
Soro was exceptional in the league and even in the buildup matches but without him, the team lacked an anchor in the paint. Teams don't just win on court and nothing can be overlooked or taken for granted.
Hope now remains with the women's team which secured their second win 63-41 against Tanzania last night.

CAMEROON : Kadji shines for the Hurricanes

Kenny Kadji
Kenny Kadji (CMR) Miami Hurricanes
MIAMI (NCAA/Afrobasket) - When Cameroon’s players gather this summer to start preparing for the Afrobasket, don't be surprised if a newcomer who goes by the name Kenny Kadji is among them.
The 2.11m Kadji, a senior at the University of Miami, would bring much-needed size to a national side whose tallest player at Afrobasket 2011 was 2.05m Joseph Owona.
Now 36, Owona averaged just over 11 minutes per game for a Cameroon team that came in a disappointing seventh in Madagascar.
The 24-year-old Kadji, who hails from Douala and played at Pendleton/IMG Academy for coach Mike Moreau before embarking on his collegiate career, would bring more than height.
He would add quality.
After a couple of disappointing seasons with the Florida Gators, Kadji transferred to Miami and has not only blossomed into one of the Hurricanes' top players, but one of the finest in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Known before the start of the season as a skilled jump-shooting big man, Kadji on Wednesday night showed against top-ranked Duke University he can do a lot more in pouring in 22 points, corralling six rebounds and swatting two shots.
On one play late in the first half, Kadji caught a pass behind the three-point arc, blew past Duke's Mason Plumlee and after one dribble, floated to his left and banked in a left-handed lay-up.
Duke showed up at Miami led by Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski and trying to bolster their reputation as the best team in the country, but Kadji and Miami rolled to a 90-63 win.
The defeat was the third worst for a No. 1 team.
Kadji and Miami have now claimed the scalps of two of college basketball's most famous teams because they also won at the University of North Carolina two weeks ago, 68-59.
The Cameroonian had 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocks against the Tar Heels.
Kadji said after the win at Carolina that he was intent on becoming a more complete player.
"I came in (to the 2012-13 season) working on ball-handling, defense," Kadji said.
"I'm trying to stay aggressive, get to the basket and shoot the ball and I'm trying to rebound."
There are a lot more games for Kadji this season.
He and Miami are trying to reach the NCAA Tournament and once there, to make an impact.
Kadji is also looking to enhance his status before the NBA Draft.
Don’t be surprised if he plays for Cameroon at the Afrobasket this summer.
Kadji would only be a positive as they attempt to qualify for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Tanzania: Blues for Tanzania Teams At Zone Five Basketball Tourney

POOR national basketball teams kissed bye to the FIBA Africa Zone Five championship finals without a single point, as they succumbed to yet another defeats at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Both the mens side Tanzanite Kings and their sisters, the Tanzanite Queens showcased dismal performance throughout the campaign and there is nothing worth writing for them. The Tanzanite Kings yesterday suffered a 70-56 defeat at the hands of Rwanda in a hotly contested encounter at the same venue.
The home side started impressively and fans were convinced that at least, they would snatch their first victory in the campaign on Monday, but such hopes were short-lived as the tide turned against them. The combination of Mussa Chacha, Abdallah Ramadhani, Sudi Ulanga, Maige Slivian and Juma Kissoky played a well coordinated game especially in the third quarter with fans cheering it up all along.
However, the substitution made by the hired American coach, Jocquis Sconiers and his assistant Bahati Mgunda was to blame to some extent. It was a disappointing end to the Tanzanite Kings who were in pool A. They lost all their three group matchesÑgoing down 95-55 to mighty Egypt on Monday, before succumbing to another 80-66 against Uganda on Tuesday.
They will now fight for the fifth slot against a team that will finish last in Group B, which has Burundi, Kenya and Somalia as pundits fear for the worst. The same applies to the Tanzanite Queens who are playing in a round robin but has lost all their games in the three outings so far and are remained with two dates against Uganda and Burundi.
Egypt is in pole position to win the title in both categories going by the standards they have exhibited in the tournament so far. The Egyptians thrashed the Tanzanite Queens 100-26 points at the same venue late on Wednesday. As the first quarter finished the Tanzanite Queens managed to record two points against 29 of their opponents. The Tanzanite Queens are today listed to play Uganda at the same venue.

Rwanda: Hoops Book Semi Final Slot

RWANDA'S MEN'S basketball team booked a semifinal slot in the ongoing 2013 Fiba Africa Zone V Afro-basket championship with an impressive 70-56 victory over hosts Tanzania, yesterday, in Dar es Salaam.
Kenny Gasana scored 28 points while Bradley Cameroon added another 24 points and made six assists to emerge as the game's MVP.
Rwanda will be joined by either Uganda or Egypt who were in action by press time.
The team has five points in three matches played so far. Egypt is second with four while Uganda has three points.
The Rwandan side will face the best ranked team in Group B which is likely to be Kenya as it sits on top of the standings with three points but might be dethroned off the spot if rivals Somalia beat Burundi in the final group match which will be played today.
Kenya has three points, one ahead of Somalia, while Burundi is placed bottom with one point.
In the women category, the women basketball team failed to maintain their perfect start to the championship after a disappointing 49-71 loss to favourites Kenya yesterday.
The women side lost under searing heat and humid Dar es Salaam temperatures with Angola based player Tierra Henderson scoring 24 points though they were not enough to match Kenya's skipper Hilda Indas, who snatched 34 points to guide Kenya to third consecutive victory.
Kenya maintain lead at the top of the women standings with eight points, while Rwanda remain on second position with three points respectively.
Rwanda beat hosts Tanzania 66-35 in the opening match whereas Kenya convincingly defeated Burundi 86-44 in their second match after a 74-32 win over Tanzania in their first match.
Rwanda face Burundi today, while Uganda will take on Kenya later in the afternoon.
The women's qualifier is being played on a round robin format with the top two teams qualifying to the African tournament.
The African Nations Cup will be held in DRC in August 2013.

UGANDA : Mixed results for Uganda in Zone V

Team Uganda’s challenge at the Fiba Africa Zone V Championships got off to an indifferent start with one victory and a defeat.
Within hours of each other, the men’s team overcame a slow start to beat hosts Tanzania 80-66 at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam on Monday evening.
Coach Mandy Juruni’s side trailed 17-10 at the end of the first quarter having arrived in the coastal town in two batches – one on Sunday and the other just hours before tip-off.
But the Ugandans rallied to record a convincing win in the end. But the women lost 64-50 to favourites Egypt yesterday morning.
Coach Timothy Odeke will push his team to try and record their first win against Burundi this morning. Uganda lost to Burundi during last year’s edition despite being the better side for long spells.
For the men, today’s fixture against Egypt is the hardest they expected.
“Egypt’s inclusion is a big plus for the tournament at a technical level. We’ll try to compete,” skipper Stephen Omony said.
Egypt beat reigning chmpions Rwanda in their opening game.
Meanwhile, the Friday Night Lights (FNL) season three was launched yesterday in Kampala with a promise that two fans would win a trip to watch the NBA game.
The one-month FNL, which secured a Shs300m three-year sponsorship from Nile Breweries under the Castle Lite brand, starts on February 1 at YMCA, Wandegeya.

The win is Kenya's 3rd at the regional tournament after they beat hosts Tanzania 74-32 in their first game on Monday then thrashed Burundi 86-44 the following day.
Kenya's next game will be against Egypt on Thursday. The women's category at the qualifiers is being played on a round robin format and this means Kenya will meet Uganda in their last match. If Kenya beats Egypt and Uganda then they would have secured a spot in the African Cup of Nations due to the fact of being the top team at the tournament.
Kenya's Vice Captain Hilda Indasi was at it once again terrorizing the Rwandan defense and at the end of the match, she had 32 points, the highest in the game followed by Angela Akoth who had 17 points.
Kenya won the 1st quarter 21-12 but lost in the 2nd quarter with a single point the scores being 13-14. The 3rd and 4th quarters saw the Kenyans dominate once more, winning the 3rd quarter with 21 points against 8 and the last quarter 18-15.

The Kenya men’s basketball team on Tuesday landed a major shock losing 81-79 to the Somali national team at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. What was expected to be an easy Group B fixture turned out to be a bitter outing for the Kenyan team that won their first match 71-63 against Burundi on Monday.
Team Captain Ancetas Wafula had 11 points in the match while Co-op Bank’s Joseph Khaemba had 22 points for the Kenyans. The Somalian duo of Abdi Ahmed and Fisal Jama gave the Kenyans a hard time with Ahmed scoring 26 points, the highest in the match while Jama gave his side 20 points.
Somali dominated the 1st quarter stunning Kenya with 19 points against 9 but Francis Ngujiri’s side managed to rally a comeback in the 2nd quarter to take it 26-21 to put the half time scores at 40-35 in favor of Somali.
In the 3rd quarter Kenya kept their foot on the pedal beating their opponents 28- 20 but slumped again in the last quarter managing only 16 points while the winners of the day had 21 points.
Somali will meet Burundi on Wednesday in the last group match that could determine who qualifies for the next stage.

Kenya: Girls Basketball Hits Burundi to Win Second Match

KENYA women's team yesterday posted their second win in a row in the FIBA Africa Zone Five Nations Cup qualifiers after whipped Burundi 89-44 in an easy tie at the National Stadium in Dar, Tanzania.
Ronnie Owino's girls rolled away to a authoritative 26-11 first quarter margin and never looked back. Burundi had the edge in the second quarter, out-scoring the Kenyans 18-16 but that was as far as they could go.
After the break, Kenya rampaged to a 21-8 advantage and another staggering display in the fourth had the at 23-7 in favour of the winners.
Once again, Hilda Indasi was who showed the way, pouring in a game high 26 points. Angela Okoth bagged 11 and Grace Wanjiku managed 11. For the Burundians, Nezerwa Ines matched Indasi point for point leading her inexperienced team in style as she sunk 26 points while Sifa Florence bagged another 16.
"This team is on fire," said captain Silalei Shani. In their opening fixture Kenya thumped Tanzania 74-32.

Tanzania: Misery Pile Up for Men's Basketball Team

TANZANIA continued with the poor show at the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone Five basketball championship at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam after going down to another defeat.
The men side, Tanzanite Kings suffered humiliating 52-95 defeat, at the hands of impressive side Egypt in their second game of the event. In their opening game, the local boys failed to contain the Uganda's pressure despite having the home ground advantage as well as supporters cheering them up from the word go.
If they lose two more games, they will automatically be out of contention for the top three position in the event pitting seven countries. Meanwhile, Egypt coach, Mohamed Hesham Sable has played down title favourite tag at the ongoing Zone Five basketball championship at the National Indoor Stadium in the city and he has predicted a stiff competition from the rest of the teams.
He said shortly after the women encounter that pitted his side against Uganda that as the day goes on the going will be tough. Egypt recorded a 64- 50 victory. "Going by the trend, the competing teams will pick up as the days go by.
They will gain more confidence and experience, it is hard to predict who the winner will be," he said shortly after the game. However, he said, the ladies did not put up the anticipated impressive performance because they were tired and the weather was not in their favour, but promised an improved performance in the coming encounters.
During the game, the Egyptian took off on a low pace while the Ugandans were out to record quick points before their opponent organised themselves. The Egyptian top scorers were Hagar Hesham-21 points and Meena Awad 16 points while for the Uganda Martha Soigi recorded 16 points and Peace Proscovia managed 12 points. In another game, Kenya women side maintained their winning formular after thrashing Burundi 89-44 in a low paced encounter at the same venue yesterday.
The event that pits seven countries continues today with Uganda taking on Burundi, while Kenya faces Rwanda in the women games. Egypt will be up against Uganda in the men morning game. In the evening, host Tanzanite Kinga will play one of the top seeded sides Rwanda in men encounter as their sisters Tanzanites Queens will try their luck against the Egyptians

Rwanda: We Lost a Better Team, Admits Basketball Coach

The reigning champions were no match for the 2009 champions, Egypt, who were simply too good, better organised and technically superior in all departments.
Rwanda's teams were scheduled to face Uganda and Tanzania in the men and women's categories, last evening.
The men's team head coach Moize Mutokambali said, "We lost to a very good team but must get back on track and make sure we don't lose any other game if we want to reach our target. There is no shame losing to a better team."

The women's team defeated hosts Tanzania 74-32, while the men's team had a good time out with a 71-63 win over Burundi.

Uganda: Women's Team Falls to Egypt

The women's basketball team started on a sour note when they lost their first game against favourites Egypt 50-64.
Today they take on Burundi in the second game and Felix Eupal looks at the team's fortunes.
The North Africans kicked off their pursuit for the women's Zone V title with a comfortable win against team Uganda at Dar es Salaam national indoor stadium on Tuesday morning. Egypt are the tournament favourites (for both men and women), going by the country's talented crop of players.
Speaking to The Observer on phone after the loss, women's head coach Timothy Odeke said the Egyptians have a disciplined squad, screen well, rebound well and have a big-size advantage against the Ugandans. Yet, despite the advantages, Odeke said Team Uganda would do well with the zone defence.
"The only problem is that we delayed to do that. It is why they took the first quarter easily," Odeke said.
Only six teams registered in the women's category (Uganda, Egypt, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania and Rwanda) and the basketball governing body Fiba decided that the women wouldn't play in groups; rather, they would play a round robin format with the top four qualifying for the semifinals.
This will definitely improve team Uganda's chances of making the semifinals if they can win their next three games. Rwanda is the other threat, considering that Uganda hasn't won a game against them in the past three years. So, that leaves Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania as Uganda's jail free cards.
Odeke believes that opening with Egypt has helped a lot because the team has learnt a lot which would help them in the upcoming games.
"We have studied how Burundi is playing; so, we know what to apply when we go against them."
The men's team, on the hand, won their first game 80-66 against hosts Tanzania in the opening game on Monday.

Kenya: Kamusinga Floor Musingu to Retain New Era Trophy

FRIENDS School Kamusinga beat Musingu 53-20 to retain the New Era basketball tournament title at Kakamega High School on Sunday. Man of the Match, Sidney Mwanza, posted 16 points while Joseph Obiero added 10 points for the winners. Chris Erwan topped the losers' chart with 10 points.
Kamusinga drubbed hapless Butula boys' 43-08 in the semis while Musingu hit St. Peter's Mumias 26-06 to reach final. A total of 13 men's teams participated the event. Premier League side, Western Delight won the women's final after beating St. Brigit's girls 32-22 in a mouth-watering encounter at the same venue.
Kenya's under-18 international player Eve Chebet scored 13 points and her compatriot Bianca Nyambura added 08 points but this was not enough to lift St. Bridgid's to victory. However, though St. Brigit's lost the final to the premiership side, they were crowned the girls' secondary schools champions. The tournament attracted six teams and was played on a round robin.
The tournament sponsored by the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) western branch marked the start of season. The event coincided with a coaching and officiating clinic course at St. Peter's Mumias. Eagles Wings head Coach Thomas Olumbo and international referee Sammy Wakaba officiated at the clinics.

Uganda: Basketball Starts Strongly in Tanzania

FOR Uganda, the 2013 FIBA Africa Zone V Afrobasket Championship promises to be a test in endurance as much as competence.
There is the searing heat and humid Dar es Salaam temperatures, which are something to endure. Uganda's teams arrived yesterday, just hours before the men took on hosts Tanzania.
However, the Ugandans appered to have been energised by the task ahead of them, humiliating the hosts 80-66 in the opening game.
The Ugandan men have been drawn in what is on paper the group of death - alongside the hosts, defending champions Rwanda and Egypt, the favourites.
Mandy Juruni's team must get two victories from group A to proceed to the semis, an incredible achievement.
Ladies taste defeat
Uganda made Egypt work for their 64-50 victory in the women's first game in the FIBA Africa Zone Five Afrobasket Championship.
Martha Soigi and Flavia Oketcho sunk 16 and 11 points respectively as Timothy Odeke's team exposed the notion that they would be outclassed by Egypt.

AFRICA : NBA sees Africa's potential

SHEFFIELD (Júlio Chitunda’s African Message) - The NBA has never been as close to Africa as it currently is.
Not only because of the record number of African players competing in a single NBA season, but also because of its grassroots presence in the continent.
Last Thursday, the NBA played its third regular season game in London in the last three years, and, of course, it attracted a considerable number of international media, seeking to find out more about the league's connections to their countries.
Africa was no exception.
In a packed press conference, NBA Commissioner David Stern and Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver outlined the league's plans of internalisation.
When it came to commenting on plans for Africa, Stern paused a few seconds before his explanation.
"Well," he said, "Amadou Gallo Fall (head of the NBA's office in Africa) keeps heading more employees to the (NBA) Johannesburg's office.
"He started up with one, and he stole one of our employees from the New York office, employed him there, and we have basketball operations.
"He seems absolutely determined to have an extended grassroots presence and increase our television coverage, both of which he has achieved in a remarkable fashion.
"He keeps up with visits from Basketball without Borders (BWB), we went to South Africa for a ninth year in a row," Stern added.
"Sponsorship businesses, companies that want to fund us and increase our grassroots and other presence are there.
"We think that Africa - as a continent of a billion people whose development of smart phones and the likes - is proceeding apace, it is an extraordinary potential market for the NBA.
"He (Amadou Gallo Fall) doesn't stop talking about it, and he has been very forceful in helping us to generate serious business there," Stern pointed out.
In other words, Africa has as much potential to offer as any other continent. All it needs is professionalism and passion to develop the basketball business.
During the 30-minute meeting, the international media focused mainly on seeing the NBA coming back to Europe either for friendly games or, more interestingly, for more regular season games.
Over the past 20 years, the NBA presence outside US has allowed for a significant number of international players to cross the Atlantic and become household names in the league without previous experience in the US.
London's O2 arena registered a sell-out house for last Thursday's game between the Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks, something that would repeat itself in places with a strong basketball following, including Africa.
However, an NBA game is much more than two teams facing each other. It involves high technology, advanced marketing, entertainment and engagement to the community - a lot of serious business.
Stern may not have said that Africa does not have appropriate facilities to accommodate NBA games, but basketball commitments in the continent would not doubt it.
Three years ago, South Africa successfully hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup, a sign that, despite its deficiencies, hosting an NBA game is not a mirage for Africa, but a real possibility.
When asked about playing more pre-season games in China, Stern replied that "everything is on the table as we access our international growth."
No doubts, that it would be great to see NBA games being played in Africa, but, inexplicably, very few countries, despite their passion for the game, would step forward to fulfil the requirements, even though Stern branded the continent as a "potential market" for the NBA.
There are currently eight African-born players in the league, bearing the African flag in the NBA.
Steve Nash (South Africa/Canada), Luc Mbah a Moute (Cameroon), De Sagana Diop (Senegal), Bismack Biyombo (DR Congo), Festus Ezeli (Nigeria), Luol Deng (South Sudan/Great Britain), Hasheem Thabeet (Tanzania), Serge Ibaka (Republic of Congo/Spain) and Al Farouq Aminu (USA/Nigeria) are NBA players with their roots in Africa.
The continent’s NBA connection started three decades ago when Dikembe Mutombo and Hakeem Olajuwon became the African pioneers in the league.
The tendency suggests an even bigger African presence in the NBA, given the number of young African players in the US colleges’ programmes.
If the NBA - with its ability to promote the game - becomes fully established in Africa, perhaps African players would not need to gain recognition in Europe or at the American collegiate level before they join NBA teams.
Realistically, basketball professionalism is highly needed in Africa in order to host NBA games and capitalize from the experience.

Rwanda: Women Team Keen to Retain Zone V Title

The national women's basketball team is keen to retain the Fiba Zone V Championship title, according to head coach Charles Mbazumutima. The tournament got underway on Monday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
In an interview coach Mbazumutima told Times Sport that he will go in the tournament with the intention of retaining the title they won two years ago in Kigali.
"Our target is to win all our matches and I am confident the girls can do it, the players have got a winning mentality. They have been doing well in training and friendly matches so I'm confident we will retain the title," he said.
The two pros linked up with the team are Henderson Tiena Monay (Angola) and Letitia Mahoro, who plays in the US. The two others who had been summoned but later dropped out, include Williams Angelica Monique (US), and Sabine Mugeni (France).
The one-week tournament has attracted six women teams from Burundi, Egypt Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and hosts Tanzania, who will play each other on a round-robin basis

Nigeria: Mark Mentors Draft Players for the New Season

The management of Mark Mentors Basketball team on Sunday night, signed on 15 drafted players for the oncoming DSTV Premier League season.
The newly established basketball club was the first to host such an event in the history of basketball in Nigeria.
The players drafted at the occasion are top stars snapped up from various top clubs within the country.
The Abuja-based team will play its matches at the Indoor Hall of the Abuja National Stadium and will be coached by an American -Cameroonian, Jotumo Abdulrahaman and Dave Black.
The General Manager of the team, Skambo Morrison expressed optimism that Mark Mentors would surprisingly, make impact in the league.
"It's a season. We are also going out to play like the other teams. We will give in our best, play by the rules, we are determined, we want to win and we want to fight and ensure that we get something out of the season."
Coach Skambo revealed that it was easy to entice players to join the team as the deals tabled could not be ignored by the players.
Nigeria's hope
Speaking with Trustsports, the proprietor of the team, Igoche Mark said the club will go on to set a standard for others to emulate in the country, stressing that Nigeria will gain from such competition.
"We have a lot of talented players in the country that can represent the national team. It's just that the avenue to show their potentials is not there and we are trying to change that."
The proprietor who was represented by his younger brother at the occasion, Audu Mark said most of the players from Benue State who made the team were product sof 'Mark D Ball' championships, stressing that when the championship is extended to other parts of the country, Nigeria will have more talents to pick from for the national teams.
While allaying fears about sponsorship challenges, he said sponsors will come when the club produces results. "There are sponsors that will come into the picture but we want to show them that we mean business."
Speaking also with TrustSports, former Nigeria Customs star man, Stanley Gumut expressed excitement for being part of the revolution in the game of basketball in the country.
"I will say I feel tensed-up right now. The challenge has been thrown at us and there is a lot of work on ground and it is not as easy as it looks. It is not all about carrying big names, big players. We all know what it takes.
Speaking about the chances of his new team in the Savanna Conference that also has Kano Pillars and Niger Potters, Gumut said: "They are big names, big clubs, they are established, they have everything that it takes and they are still a team to beat. We don't know how we look like until we get on the court. That's all I can say right now."
