ZIMBABWE : Girls High Triumph

  • Girls High School continued with their dominance in basketball when they clinched the Under-16 title on Saturday.
The tournament was held at Queen Elizabeth and attracted teams from 26 schools.
However, the day belonged to Girls High as they proved to be too good for their opponents.
They beat Mufakose 2 18-12 in the finals. Earlier on they had dismissed Zengeza 2 13-2 in the semi-finals.
Last week they won the Under-14 tournament, which saw them earning a ticket to represent the province at the inter-provincial championships, set for Mutare next month.
Girls High had earlier on emerged the winners in the group stages when they beat Mufakose 1 High 21-2.
They went on to beat Mufakose 2 21-2 before they overpowered Highfield 24-0.
Girls High sports director, Miriam Moyo, attributed their success to their sound development programme.
"We actually expected the win because five of our girls were part of the team select that went to the national finals last year and brought gold, so it was a straight win.
"It simply means that we have now achieved our goal of building our teams from grassroots, it is beginning to pay dividends," said Moyo.
Moyo some of their players will be part of the Under-16 team that will represent the province at the inter-provincials.
"Seven of players have been selected into the provincial squad that is going to participate in the inter-provincial because for the Under-16 they go as a select team unlike in the Under-14 where the winners represent the province."
Kuwadzana High finished in third place.
