Today might feel like 12 months ago for UCU Lady Canons. Last December, UCU swept A1 Challenge 4-0 to clinch a second MTN-Fuba League title in three years.
UCU can repeat the feat if they overcome KCC Leopards at YMCA court just before the men’s finalists – DMark Power and Warriors – jostle for control of their own seven-game series which the latter lead 2-1. Unlike the first two games which UCU won by a canter, Game Three was much closer.

The Mukono side won 45-39 with reigning MVP Maureen Amoding scoring a game-high 12 points including a late three that gave them the crucial lead. With the exception of Lorraine Akinyi and Brenda Mbone, UCU are dribbling time in the examination room and success on court. “It’s hectic. Our experience and attitude should be good. It’s not over yet,” Amoding said.
KCC guard Flavia Oketcho fell short of promising to take matters into her own hands and the result was zero points last time out to compound her struggles. “They won three games so we can do the same,” KCC coach Timothy Odeke said. “We made some bad decisions but can build on the last display to do a better job.” KCC’s Miriam Hamala and Carol Nantalo were part of the Makerere Sparks team that won the championship in 2003 while teammate Oketcho led UCU to their first title.
No one needs to explain the same to either Warriors or Power following three blowout games. After two one-sided games won by Warriors (88-73 and 80-61), Power burst out of their shells on Wednesday night.
Warriors can still be champions this weekend by winning today and tomorrow’s Game Five. The onus is on the champions which they showed by annihilating their rivals 85-55. “Saturday (today) is going to be hard. Mandy is a brilliant guy and will do his homework to rectify this,” Power coach Bernice Ankunda said in praise of his Warriors’ colleague Mandy Juruni.
