KENYA : KPA thrashed .

KENYA Ports Authority (KPA) started their Africa Club Championships campaign on a sour note succumbing to 37-81 defeat at the hands of reigning champions Inter Club of Angola as the 17th continental show tipped off in Nigeria on Sunday. The dockers, who are also the reigning national champions, found out early that the Angolans were a different proposition, putting them to the sword from the onset as they took a 23-7 edge in the first quarter.

In the first five minutes, the victors had raked in 17 unanswered points and it was Everlyn “Taliban” Akoth , who have Kenyan the first points courtesy of a three-pointer. New recruit Mercy Wanyama nailed the next two baskets. It , however, didn’t take long before Inter Club, who are enjoying top form, started to exert pressure. They rained baskets against KPA, whose preparations for the event were suspect from the start, reducing them to minnows. KPA managed to score 4 points in the second quarter and were left trailing 11-40 as the one-sided first half came to an end.
In the third quarter, the Angolans build the game’s biggest lead of 52 points as they subjected KPA to their worst ever defeat in many years at the competition. The KPA technical bench seemed to have run out of ideas as scores swelled to 66-14. With the damage already done, Interc Club slowed down in the last quarter with a 15-10 edge. KPA senior players under-performed in this showdown with non of them showing directions.
Akoth made 7 and Salma Akinyi added 6. For the rampaging Angolans, Vincente Asirida Tumba buried 19 points and Green Danielle managed 16. In the other games, First Bank were awarded a 20-0 walkover win over INJS of Cameroon while the hosting club First Deepwater beat GD Maculosso 64-46. Chinyere Ibekwe had 21 and Nkechi Akashile (16) for the winners. The format of play is round robin and the top four team will proceed to semi’s with the winners at this stage clashing in final The semis will be played on December 9 and finals a day later. 10th Dec 2011.
