Brown Msyani,
Dar es Salaam. Tanzania hosted the two-week Zone V Basketball Championship, but had nothing to be proud about after the curtains were brought down on Saturday. Jeshi Stars (women), who lost 60-52 to KCC Leopards of Uganda, were primed to win respect for Tanzania, but had little to offer when they finished fourth.
Their men counterparts Savio, a dominant force in the country, settled for the fifth place after going downing fighting 69-64 to KBC of Rwanda.
As if the defeats were not enough, the Tanzanian players could not emerge winners in individual categories. Sifa Kalume of Berko Stars was on Saturday announced the best player of the tournament after being inspirational for her team.
The Burundian had a tremendous for Berko Stars despite going down to KPA of Kenya in the final 57-42.
“I am delighted to win this honour, I never expected to land it because there were lots of players who also deserved it,” Kalume said after picking her prize.
Kalume was a notable figure in Berko Stars’ victories over KPA in an earlier game before scoring points galore to down KCC in a semi-final encounter.
The best three-pointer scorer win went to Flavia Okocho of KCC while the best rebound grabber was Berko Stars’ Nerelwa Inas

In the men’s event, the three-pointe prize went to Mhure Elibo of Rwanda’s KBC and the rebound grabber was Benuenue Neandu of APR of Rwanda.
Urunani of Burundi were crowned the men’s champions after edguing out Cooperrative Bank of Kenya 69-61 in a well contested game at the National Indoor Stadium.
