TANZANIA : Dar es Salaam Men's Teams Struggle At Africa Zone Five Champs

THE Tanzania men's sides continued to enjoy poor run of form at the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone Five Basketball Club Championship when Savio and Vijana lost their games on Tuesday.

Unlike their female counterparts, Jeshi Stars, who have maintained their impressive run in the Championship, the going has proved tough for the local men teams.
Tanzania's Savio succumbed to a 34-49 defeat at the hands of Rwanda's KCB in a hotly contested encounter at the Don Bosco courts in the city on Tuesday.
Likewise, one of the local top sides Vijana could not demonstrate their prowess against Rwanda's APR and allowed their opponents dictate the terms and eventually went down to soul searching 83-53 defeat.
Vijana had looked sharp in the first quarter but got lost as the game progressed into the second, third and final quarters and were easily ran ragged by the Rwandese outfit.
Vijana, who have been taking part in various continental meets, played as a mere underdogs on Tuesday and could not display their usual skills, giving APR chance of pinning them at their own domain.
So far, Jeshi Stars stands a better chance of making it to the finals having won two games, the opening match against Ethiopia's Government House Agency and Burundi's Berco Stars.
The Dar es Salaam ladies whipped Government House Agency 71-49 in the opening match of the women's category on Sunday before edging out Burundi's Berco Stars 59-53 in an entertaining encounter the following day.
However, Jeshi Stars have a tough assignment today when they play one of the tournament favourites, Kampala City Council (KCC), in a game billed to be a sew-saw affair going by the standards of both side.
Should Jeshi Star win today's encounter, they will have an assignment against Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to determine where they finish after the preliminary stage.
In other game on Wednesday Berco will face KPA as Jeshi take on KCC in the women's category matches at the National Indoor Stadium, while in the men's category Tanzania's ABC will be trying to settle scores when they meet Rwanda's Urunani as KBC face Coops bank at the same venue.
Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) has organized the tournament that has brought together top clubs from the East, Central and Horn of Africa countries.
The tournament has been sponsored by Sprite.
