Denis Mbidde, the 7UP Falcons president, is vowing not to go down without a fight after the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) technical committee ruled that his team will lose three points for using an unregistered.

Falcons fielded Philip Alweny in the victory against Charging Rhino and loss to Kyambogo Warriors. But Mbidde said he had not been informed about the penalty and accused Fuba of witch-hunt. “Maybe they have something against us,” an irate Mbidde said. “I gave the Fuba technical committee a copy of the release of this boy from Co-operative Bank (Kenya) so how can they deduct our points?”

The Kenyan played in both without clearance from his club and the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF), according to William Musaazi, the Fuba technical committee chairman. He said Alweny is absconding from duty at Kenyan side Cooperative Bank. Alweny was prevented from taking to the floor in Falcons’ 80-69 loss to UCU Canons last Friday.
“We wrote to them and even advised Mbidde not use the player until he is cleared but they refused. If they appeal, it’s their right,” said Musaazi. Mbidde, who last week accused Fuba of being ‘inept and ineffective like all federations’, said: “How can a player whose contract expired be absconding from duty? He is a free agent. We even asked Fuba and they let him play.”

If the appeal fails, Falcons, now 3-5 after the decision made on Tuesday, face an uphill battle to make the play-offs as they lie bottom of the 10-team division.
