TANZANIA : Isles Govt to support basketball promotion

The President of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar Amani Abeid Karume said the government will construct an indoor stadium with basketball courts to develop and promote related sporting activities.

Karume made the announcement during the basketball tournament final match between Police and Stone Town played at Gymkhana venue on Saturday.

He said the plans are underway to construct the venue by the Isles Minister for Information, Culture and Sports.

“For the purpose of enhancing sports development in Zanzibar, the government plans to construct an indoor stadium” , said President Karume.

President Karume insisted that youths in Zanzibar should engage in sport activities which are source of employment.

“Through sports you will also build good health amdf prolong life span”, he insisted.

During the final match of the tournament that got underway in August 27, witnessed Police being crowned champions after defeating Stone Town by 67-52.

JKU emerged winners for women after breezing past Maisara side. Only four women teams participated in the tournament.

Winners of the edition got away with a cash prize amounting to 700,000/-, while the first and second runners up pocketed 500,000/- and 300,000/- , respectively.

Basketball has not been the highly fancied sport in the Isles as most of the people are obsessed with soccer, that also has its standard plunging deep into doldrums.
