BOTTSWANA : Bitter-Sweet Year for Basketball

Apart from the national league, there was not much basketball action in 2009. The Botswana Basketball Association (BBA) continued to struggle to find a sponsor for the league, but nevertheless carried on. The league was however marred by teams' failure to honour fixtures, resulting in the association coming down hard on errant clubs. The BBA amended its constitution and came up with tough regulations to deal with the problem. Two Francistown-based clubs, Dolphins and Splinters were suspended from the league for failure to fulfill fixtures.

Troopers continued their dominance, winning the domestic league once again. BDF V won in the women's category. Despite the league running without a sponsor, BBA managed to find sponsors for the mid-season basketball tournament and for the end of season play-offs. Aktiv Sports financed the mid-season event and Beemark sponsored the play-offs. BBA revived the women's league, which has been dormant for years.

The association organised training courses for coaches and officials. A total of 20 coaches completed Level One and Two courses. About 30 referees and match officials were trained.

The national team did not participate in any regional or international competition this year. However, the development sides did well with the Under-17 boys winning bronze and girls getting silver in COSASSA Games in September.
