TANZANIA : Midway triumph in SBL

By Brown Msyani

Midway and Ahmes schools got off their Dar es Salaam School Basketball League (SBL) campaigns on a high note after defeating Kigamboni and Shaaban Roberts respectively.

Newcomers Midway taught hapless Kigamboni a basketball lesson when they demolished them by 60-14points while Ahmes had to apply extra intelligence to overcome spirited Shaaban Roberts 30-20.

Playing at the National Indoor Stadium, Ahmes terrorised their opponents regularly and until the end of the second half, they had an unassailable 20-6 lead.

Shaaban Roberts pressed hard to match their rivals' brilliance, but their efforts did not pay off instead Ahmes continued to score crucial points.Three-point expert Solomon Manase of Ahmes emerged the match's top scorer after posting 12 points, all garnered from four three-point shots.
"Our defence was outstanding in the second half and we're happy to have defeated them. We were shaky in the first half, but we managed to regain our poise," Manase said.Ahmes relied on prolific playmaker Musa Chacha who engineered most of their dangerous attacks.

Midway, who are participating for the first time, eased past Kigamboni in the one-sided encounter held at the same venue.Boasting of a formidable squad, the winners completed the first half with a commanding 32-4 lead.

Nasoro Haji, who was a constant threat to Kigamboni, emerged the games top scorer after chalking up 14 points followed by Kigambonis Shaaban Mohamed who managed six points.

The league continues today at JKT Mgulani where six matches will be played.
