RWANDA : B-ballers ready for polls

BY JULIUS MBARAGA

After a productive four-year tenure in office, the basketball fraternity is ready to vote into office a new executive committee of the local basketball governing body, Ferwaba.

According to Ferwaba president Fidele Rutagarama, elections are scheduled for April 25 at Ferwaba’s premises in Remera.
“We shall have elections at the end of this month and we hope that whoever takes up a seat on the executive will carry on from where we stopped,” he said.
The posts to be contested for include president, vice president, secretary general, treasurer and two technical advisors. However, it is still unclear whether current executive members intend to seek another term of office.
During Rutagarama’s term, the sport has taken great strides.
The country made her first ever Afro-basket appearance in 2007 after a second spot finish in the 2007 Zone 5 championships that were won by Egypt.
Rwanda is also scheduled to compete in this year’s Afro-basket competitions in Libya after finishing second to Egypt in this year’s Zone 5 championships.

The ladies’ national side will also make their debut appearance in the African nations basketball championships for women in Madagascar later this year.
Further still, APR became the first ever local club to compete in the Fiba-Africa club championship back in 2007.
