KENYA : Fiba to fund members secretariats

International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has a pilot project to fund all the federation secretariats for continuity in the development of the sport.

FIBA-Africa Zone Five president Morris Aluanga said the international body wants all the federation secretaries-general of the member countries to be full time employees for the continuity of the funded programmes.
According to Aluanga, FIBA will meet the salaries of officials to discourage the current scenario of having to elect the officials every after four years.
Aluanga, who served as the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) chairman for one term between 1999-2002 said FIBA will hold a central board meeting early next year in Europe to deliberate on the 15 countries which will be the first beneficiaries of the pilot project.

The project will run in phases to cover all the federations. Vitalis Gode is the current KBF secretary-general.
He said federations will advertise the posts of secretary-general to get a qualified people whose names will be forwarded to FIBA headquarters in Geneva for the monthly full time salary funding.
Aluanga, added that FIBA-Africa will hold a two-day central board meeting in Cairo, Egypt from Januay 25 to discuss the activity reports from all the Africa zones.
“All the zone presidents will be required to submit a calendar of events to be discussed and thereafter sent to FIBA world to show the need for the future funding that will depend to the activeness of each zone’’ said Aluanga.

He said FIBA-Africa under president Ekra Alain and secretary-general Alphonse Bile both of Cote D’ Ivoire is committed in assisting member federations to promote the game.
Aluanga said the two officials presented Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Mozambique with outdoor scoreboards and 24 seconds clocks during the just concluded 14th edition of the Africa women’s club championship in Nairobi.
