NIGERIA : Immigration Upsets Dolphins

Zenith League

After years of losing to Dolphins of Lagos, the Immigration team yesterday rose to the occasion by beating Dolphins 53-52 on Day 5 of the Zenith Bank Women’s League holding in Lagos. The match, which was the first match of the day, was an early morning shocker for the Dolphins, who have consistently been the number two team in the league.
“A number of my players were sick from food poisoning but they had to play against doctor’s advice; they were very sick. But I don’t want to use that as an excuse. The players were too relaxed for a game at this level and we have paid dearly for that. This was not a game to lose but things went wrong,” Wale Aboderin, the Dolphins owner and manager told THISDAYSports.
The loss was the fifth for Dolphins in 25 matches since the league began three months ago. But for the Immigration ladies the win was just the second for them since arriving in Lagos last week. The win will help secure them from the drop zone while the loss may cause Dolphins their current second spot by the time the league rounds off on Saturday. Dolphins and Delta Force were tied on points at the second position with Sunshine Angels close on their heels when the final phase began last Thursday.
In another Zenith League game played at the National Stadium yesterday Sunshine Angels maintained their good run with a 63-36 victory over FCT Angels. It was the fifth straight loss for the FCT ladies who are playing within the drop zone. Plateau Rocks defeated AHIP Queens 52-51 in another slip victory of Monday.
Today will serve as match free day but tomorrow Nigeria Customs and AHIP will start the first battle of the day. Their match will be followed by that between Plateau Rocks and Delta Force. The star match tomorrow is the last match of the day between Sunshine Angels and Dolphins.
In the men’s Premier League, Yelwa Hawks began their Road Trip yesterday in Asaba. The Lagos Islanders team will be host to the Hawks tonight in Lagos. The road games of Yelwa Hawks will end on Saturday with the line up against Union Bank.
