The winner of this year's male category of the Nestle Milo Secondary School Basketball Championship is to represent Nigeria at the 2009 World Schools' Basketball Championship scheduled for Istanbul, Turkey.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos yesterday to herald the 10th edition of the Milo Basketball Championship, Dr. Thomas Adeleke Olaiya, President of the School Sports Federation, revealed that the event that started in 1999 with 30,000 students from 1,000 has now grown to over 80,000 from 3,197 schools in the country as at last year.

"It has been quite challenging and rewarding organising this competition for 10 years running," observed the school sports federation boss.

Dr Adeleke observed further that the championship has made remarkable impacts that have put Nestle Nigeria Plc on the map of grassroots sports development in Nigeria, especially in the game of basketball.
He listed some of the products of the championship that are making waves in the country and abroad to include; Muhammed Bukar of Wahab Folawiyo High School, Lagos, and Ibrahim Adamu of Ahmadiyya College, Lagos. Both are in Nigeria's Under-18 national team. Magdalene and Sandra German and a few others are playing for top club sides as well.

Earlier, Mr Klaus P. Wachsmuth, managing director of Nestle Nig Plc had in his welcome address assured the federation that Nestle Milo "will continue to sponsor the development of sport in Nigeria because we believe that it is a very strong platform for unity, social interaction and good sportsmanship."

The Nestle boss further believes that this developmental championship holds the key to Nigeria's future international success and recognition in basketball.
