NIGERIA : Ilupeju: UNILAG beat Bayelsa Waves to title
….as D.D Magic finish 3rd
University of Lagos male basketball team Saturday became the new king of the Ilupeju Classics with a 43-37 points win over Bayelsa Waves basketball club of Yenogoa.
The Emmanuel Okolo tutored side came back strongly into the game in the third to snatch victory at the expense of the Yenogoa-based Waves.
Both side game good accounts of themselves as the two sides parades some tested players who hold their own in the five-day Classics.
Daniel Iremiren was spectacular on the board for the Waves picking up valuable offensive and defensive rebound and making important basket with great supports from guards, Chiwendu Nwaigbo, Azuoma Dike and Farouk Musa Oyalade among others.
UNILAG on the other hand relied on experience play of Michael Ohiero, William Ndoumbe and Christopher Okoh.
D.D Magic picked the third place with a 33-24 points win over the 5th edition champion, Royal Hoopers basketball club of Port Harcourt.
The next edition of the Classics billed for July this year and promises to be bigger as it is expected to coincide with the birth day celebration of the Coordinator of the Dodan Warriors Basketball Programme, Col. Sam Ahmedu (Rtd).
According to the director of the Warriors Academy, Peter Ahmedu, organizers of the quarterly Classics, the seventh edition will be bigger in terms of participation and organization as Premier league team are expected to take part and more upward mobile and tested players.
“We are happy to have organized the very first basketball competition in 2008 and on behalf of the management of the Warriors Academy I want to thank all the teams, officials and players that participated in this edition as we look forward to July for the seventh edition and the second this year”, the Academy director concluded.
