RWANDA : Owuor Plans to Beef Up Squad

Cliff Owuor, the APR basketball coach has said that he hopes to strengthen his side ahead of the 2007 National basketball league. The tactician anticipates greater competition from clubs likes Gisenyi's Marines, Basketball United Generation (BUG), Rwanda National University (UNR) and arch-rivals Espoir.

"It's true we won the league last year after tiring play-offs. But, despite the fact that we secured a three-straight game victory against Espoir in the finals, there were strong signs that the 2007 season would even demand more from our team," said the experienced coach.

The former Kenyan national basketball team star, currently handling the national women basketball side ahead of the Zone V basketball championships said; "the point-guard and centre positions are the major areas of my focus. We have one of the best players in these positions in the league but we still need a back-up."

APR was the outright club with much depth in the entire league, going by the 2006 records.

"One advantage APR had over other clubs during the 2006 league was that it had depth in its squad. Unlike other clubs that would tire their players because of limited options, APR freely alternated their players," noted an official of the Rwanda Basketball federation.Owuor, whose club contract winds up in June, also hinted that this year, APR will be looking at manifesting itself on the continental scene.

"The club is eyeing success in the East and Central Club Championships. We need to win this event in order for us to compete in the highly fancied African Club Championships," added the tactician.

The 2007 national basketball league is expected to tick off after the All African Games qualifiers scheduled for early February.
