KENYA : Telkom Beat Mombasa High in Jamhuri Final

National Classic basketball league champions Telkom Kenya survived an early scare before beating East Africa schools champions Mombasa High School 51-41 to lift the Jamhuri Cup national basketball tournament at the KPA Hall Makande, Mombasa on Saturday.

Telkom, still fresh from beating KPA to reclaim the national women's crown after three years, almost paid the price for complacency when the schoolgirls, playing for the first time since the East Africa school games in Tanzania, scored six quick points through Irene Wanyama before Brenda Wasuda and Purity Adhiambo added four more for a 10-0 lead. But Joyce Makhungu, Carolyne Majeng Achieng, Eunice Ouma and Rebecca Serange stepped up the pace to reduce the score to 12-09 at the end of the first quarter.
The school girls, playing without star centre Beatrice Awino, who is in the US on a five-year basketball scholarship, continued to give Telkom difficult moments, Diana Sarah and speedy Everlyne Adhiambo coming into the picture strongly as they led 21-19 at the break.
Sensing danger, Telkom came to the second half forcefully, controlling the third and fourth quarters where they outscored the students 14-06, and 16-08 to win the game.
Wanyama top scored for Mombasa with 14 points while Brenda Wasuda, Fatma Mohammed and Diana Sarah scored eight, four and two points respectively.Makhungu was Telkom's top scorer with 20 points while Rebecca Serange and Eunice Ouma scored 14 and eight points respectively.

In matches played earlier, Telkom had beaten Strathmore University 33-25 while Mombasa High beat university students 40-17 in the tournament tha attracted only three women's teams.
