SWAZILAND : Waterford is schools champion

BASKETBALL - WATERFORD College were crowned champions of the Basketball Schools tournament in both girls and boys games held at the Coronation Park on Saturday.

Waterford walloped St. Michael's 24 - 14 in the finals of the girls section and also beat St. John Bosco 33 - 27 in the finals of the boys section.

They went home with two floating trophies. Their good performance comes after a one-week workshop held by the Concrete Hooks from London at the College last month.

In the girls section waterford qualified for the finals after beating St. Marks' 12 -1 during the quarter finals. St. Mark's failed to impress throughout the match and they scored their point in the last round. During the finals Waterford reinforced with a strong squad giving St. Michael's no room.

Waterford players, who showed great skills throughout the game, included the likes of Charlotte Legoabe, Zama Lekoma and Judy Reissman. St. Michael's tried in vain to strike back with the pair of Zandile Nkambule and Nolungelo Maseko but all efforts proved fruitless. In the boys section Waterford was once beaten by Bahai 22-12 during the robin round games but then Bahai failed to qualify for the finals as they were thrashed by Bosco 28-25.

Schools that participated in the boys section were Waterford, Bosco, St. Francis, Bahai, St. Mark's, Salesian and St. Christopher's.

In the girls section only four schools showed, up and these were Waterford, St. Michael's, St. Mark's and St. Anne's.

The organiser of the tournament Nathi Simelane, said they were not happy with the turnout as they had expected many more schools.
