KENYA : Runda too strong for the Blazers

By Dann O’were

Runda blanked Trail Blazers 72-53 in an exciting Nairobi Basketball Association league match at the Railways Club over the weekend.
The victors fielded veteran players Morris Aluanga, Noel Goevene, Ken Ondiek, John "West" Kinyua, Robert Nyasimi and Ronny Owino, who showed little mercy for the blazers.
At the break, the victors were already 34-29 up, despite an impressive performance from Blazers’ centre Steve "Chief" Okwako.
Runda’s Ben Oluoch and Dan Nalwenge, who were all in outstanding form, were responsible for most of the damage.
Oluoch led with 28 points, while Goevene sunk a further 9 points. Ondiek added another 9.
Blazers’ Okwako managed 18 points, but were insufficient to salvage his side from defeat. In another match, Geoffrey Ocholla’s 22 points helped Langata Crusaders to romp to a 50-30 victory over Yassets Mercenaries, while Team Jam’s Jerry Rawlings bagged 22 points in a 75-47 win over Catholic Dream Team.
Africa Nazarane University pipped Outsidaz 49-44 in a closely fought duel. The varsity side’s Sam Wamantahi and Outsidaz’s Zachariah Mwangi both managed 13 points in the nail-biting encounter.
In the ladies’ matches, Kenyatta University (KU) "Oryx" ran rings over Africa Nazarene University when they crushed them 69-10 in a one-sided encounter.
KU’s Lucy Wanjiku hit 18 points, Linda Likoko added another 16, while Fridah Kajuju scored 15.
In another match, Lepishoi Surtan hit 10 points to lead Nairobi Pentecostal Church to a 40-36 victory over Mennonmites, who had 12 from Florence Mbithe.
