BURUNDI: Burundi Out of Regional Hoops Event

BURUNDIAN basketball teams will not feature in this year's East and Central club Basketball and the Inter Cities championships following their indiscipline during last year's regional meet in Kampala.

The Burundian national men's team was last year at the showed unsportsman behavior during the East, Central and Southern Africa Senior basketball championships semi final game against Uganda.

The assistant Secretary General for East African Basketball Association Mr. Ronnie Owino told Daily Monitor that Burundi will not participate again in any regional organised events unless they pay a fine of US$1000.

" We still stand by that regulation by the regional federation and unless they pay the fine, they will never again take part in any tournament in the region organised by our federation," Owino said.

The Burundians interrupted their preliminary game against Rwanda before the poorly officiated semi final by Ugandan referee Sam Bahwayo and Burundi's Austine Ndayitwayeko which sparked off fights on court and the disqualification of Burundi." This was the highest degree of indiscipline, with a sorry refereeing standard. Burundi has been a problem in all the regional championships but this time our action is serious," regional federation president Mr. Moris Aluanga said.

The club championship tips off on April 25-30 at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi-Kenya while the Inter Cities Basketball tourney is salted for May 17-21 at Lugogo indoor Stadium-Kampala.

Uganda will be represented by A-1 Challenge in the women's event and Nkumba Marines for the men.
