UGANDA: Teams to Be Fined for Late Registration

MTN league teams face a Shs 40,000 fine for failing to beat the Friday March 10 registration deadline. All the Division I sides have not cleared their registration dues for the new 2006 season slated to tip off on March 31.

Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) had postponed the exercise from February 23, in order to enable teams prepare.

When contacted, FUBA technical chairman Mr. Yunus Nkutu told Daily Monitor that the regulation still stands.

"We still stand by the regulation and teams that failed to register on Friday, must pay a fine of Shs 40,000," said Nkutu.

They are required to pay Shs100,000 for registration and Shs20,000 for the referees/coaches clinic.

By Friday, only three Division II teams, Makerere Youth Heaters, Jinja Flammers and debutants Druu had cleared.

Nkutu also said that all teams must send a coach and a referee for the clinic that shall run from March 16-19 at YMCA before the league starts at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

"It's a technical regulation and no team(s) shall be allowed to register next year without a qualified referee," Nkutu added.

All teams according to the new constitution must have registered players with licenses together with a qualified referee.A total of eight new sides are to join the league, which will expand to a record 48 teams. This has prompted the Federation to increase relegation teams to three in the top divisions.
