NIGERIA: Rashidat, Colleagues Weep

Members of the Nigerian female basketball team wept like babies yesterday after narrowly crashing 75 - 78 to England in the third place match at the on going Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. The Nigerian team, which was down by three points, 72 - 75 before coming from behind to even scores at 75 - 75, had an opportunity of cruising home to win the bronze medal on offer but missed out after losing her two free throws after being fowled.

Loser of the throws, Rashidat Sadiq was the worst hit as she wept uncontrollably questioning though, rhetorically why she lost the throws.

"This is very sad. We did our best to earn a medal but ill luck denied us. What can I say? At least we all saw the game and how we came from behind to snatch the points but we were just unlucky not to have won the bronze here," she said amid tears.

The team had shot into the lead early in the match but soon lost control allowing the English girls to dictate the pace.

However, the match, which saw both teams determined to win the third place, left the Nigerians nervous throughout the game. Nigeria lost several scoring chances that eventually paved the way for an exciting evening for the girls from England.
